University Health Insurance Plan

What is UHIP and who needs it?

The UHIP program, available since 1994, provides health care coverage comparable to that provided by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for all international employees, students and their accompanying families who are not eligible for OHIP.

Since the plan is compulsory, internationals should NOT purchase another health insurance to cover them while in Canada.

When do I or my dependents enroll in UHIP?

You must enroll as soon as you arrive in Ontario. Your dependents must enroll within 30 days of their initial arrival in Canada. If you enroll or re-enroll your dependents more than 30 days after their initial date of arrival in Canada, or after their previous UHIP coverage expires, the late dependent enrolment administrative fee of $500 and other conditions will apply.

How do I enroll in UHIP?

All paid and unpaid international workers as well as visitors are required to visit Human Resources to arrange coverage. Contact should be made with your Payroll Benefits Assistant to arrange an appointment time. Please make arrangements for a translator to accompany you to Human Resources if you require assistance with the English language.

How much does UHIP cost?

Rates effective September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007.

What if I have alternative health coverage?

Some students/workers/official visitors may already have coverage equivalent to UHIP through another agency. Only the following plans have pre-approved exemption:

Canadian International Development Agency Health Care Plan
Canadian Bureau for International Education Health Care Plan
Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
International Council for Canadian Studies Plan
The National Insurance Office for Social Insurance Abroad (Norway)
World University Service of Canada Plan
OHIP coverage
Embassy of Kuwait

This list is taken from the UHIP website and is subject to change. All other students/workers/official visitors must enroll.
